Anthony Yooshin Kim, Asian American Studies

Dr. Anthony Yooshin Kim is a transdisciplinary and transmedia scholar, writer, and artist. He received his Ph.D. in Literature/Cultural Studies from the University of California, San Diego where he also completed his B.A. in Ethnic Studies with minors in Film Studies and Literatures of the World. Situated at the nexus of French New Wave cinema, Third cinema, and U.S. film and video, his research explores the act and art of documentation in moments of historical crisis, change, and revolution. Presently, he is in post-production for a documentary film titled, Water/Memory, which provides an intimate history of his mother’s journey from South Korea to the U.S. in the late 1970s and her experiences of immigration, labor, motherhood, and illness to the present.

As an educator, Dr. Kim believes in a pedagogy of improvisation that worlds the classroom through student-centered processes of critical, creative, and most importantly, collaborative engagement. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he enjoys running long distances, marathon karaoke sessions, and cheesy ’90s slow jams.
