The Arts at Hunter

Art GalleryHunter’s programs in art, dance, film, music, and theatre have long been a vibrant part of the College’s life as well as the cultural life of New York City. These programs play a triple role: they train the artists of tomorrow; they provide high-level cultural events for the wider community as well as the College; and they strengthen the bonds between Hunter and the city. Art exhibits are mounted at the College’s two art galleries, and performances are given at the Assembly Hall, which seats more than 2,000; the state-of-the-art Kaye Playhouse, a 624-seat proscenium theatre; the Lang Recital Hall (149 seats), an architectural jewel used primarily for individual recitals, film festivals, and jazz and chamber-music concerts; and the Frederick Loewe Theatre, a versatile black-box performance space that can host various types of productions. All of the performance spaces have been newly designed or thoroughly updated and refurbished within the last 10 years.

Hunter’s Art Department is internationally renowned for its high-quality programs, whose faculty and graduates exhibit in the world’s most famous museums. The Art Department organizes and mounts many exhibits throughout the year at the Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Gallery on the 68th Street campus and at the MFA Gallery located at 205 Hudson Street. These exhibits, often curated by Hunter faculty with the assistance of art students, regularly featuring the work of Hunter graduates, are professional shows and are frequently reviewed in important art journals as well as general media such as The New York Times.

The Department of Film and Media offers screenings and presentations with professional filmmakers and media artists held each semester in the Lang Recital Hall, the Student Film and Video Society hosts an annual Film Festival, and the department houses the Integrated Media Arts MFA program, with students whose work has been featured at festivals around the world.

Thanks to Hunter’s Music Department, music lovers can attend performances of the Hunter Symphony; the Hunter College Collegium Musicum, a chamber ensemble; the Hunter College Choir; the Vocal Performance Workshop; the Chamber Music Workshop; the Jazz Ensemble; and the Jazz Vocal Workshop Ensemble—as well as individual recitals by faculty members and students. Many Hunter faculty members who perform at the college are well-known musicians who play at major venues worldwide, and Hunter Symphony performances have featured such acclaimed guest soloists as Emmanuel Ax, Vladimir Feltsman, Frederica von Stade, and Andre Watts. Hunter students with the requisite abilities can audition to play in Hunter’s performance ensembles.

Hunter’s Dance Program also presents performances open to the Hunter community and the public: a full-fledged dance concert and a “works in progress” performance. Choreographers-in-residence, whose residency is funded by the Harkness Foundation for Dance, have included a number of well-known figures including Vicki Shick, Patrik Widrig, Lisa Race, and Bill Young. The only program in the CUNY system that offers a major and minor in dance, Hunter’s dance program also conducts a dance outreach program that tours New York public high schools to present lecture-demonstrations designed to introduce high school students to the world of dance.

Hunter's Theatre Department is known for its praise-worthy performances of both modern and classic plays. In addition to staging theatrical works—Hunter students are the actors and Hunter faculty are the directors—the department also publishes HotReview.org, an online forum for critical writing about the contemporary theatre.
