Statement on Institutional Learning Outcomes
Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO's) convey the institution's priorities for learning to current and prospective students. Two years ago, the Office of the Provost and the Hunter College Senate sponsored faculty, staff, and student workshops to develop new ILO's. Working off the College Mission Statement and comments received during those meetings, an ILO Committee met during spring 2016 to discuss campus-wide learning expectations for all Hunter graduates. The result of those deliberations is linked here. Students will gain the institutional learning through curricular—General Education and studies in the major--and co-curricular activities; they will find opportunities for mastering the ILO's across the institution. Like all learning at Hunter, the ILO's will be the subject of systematic assessment with an eye on institutional improvement. Beginning in fall 2017, we will solicit feedback on the ILO's document from across the campus, before releasing the final version.

The Office of Assessment assists academic departments with the management of student learning through all aspects of assessment, from the development of program learning outcomes to closing the loop." In addition, the office works with administrative units to gauge achievement of their performance goals, including student learning outcomes where relevant. In cooperation with the Senate Assessment Committee, the Office helps to define policies, practices, and expectations regarding assessment-related documentation and processes. The main purpose of assessment for the Hunter community is continuous institutional improvement, but transparent, rigorous assessment of student learning also justifies the government investment in accredited higher education institutions through the Federal Title IV financial aid program.
