Is the research paper dead? Reinvigorating the research process

What are we asking students to do when they write research papers? This genre has recently come under fire, with some studies suggesting that research papers reflect limited student understanding of how to argue from sources and others declaring it a dead genre that promotes conventional thinking. In this session, we will examine these claims to guide a discussion about how to reinvigorate the research process for students. Wendy Hayden will explore how students can devise more nuanced questions to guide their research and will show examples from a project in which undergraduates undertake research in the Hunter College Archives. Jonathan Cain will show how an online research journal can be used to help students with their research process by supporting a repeatable method of doing library research. - What is involved in producing a good research paper in your field?
- What kind of research do you expect students to do for your
assignments? - What research strategies do you teach?
- What challenges do you see in the research paper as a genre?
