Can we measure learning? Yes, if we start with meaningful learning outcome statements

October 30, 2012, 12-2 pm

This session will offer an overview of learning outcomes in the context of pedagogy and attempt to answer three relevant questions:

  • Can we measure student learning in a meaningful way?
  • Can we rely on learning outcomes without destroying the learning (creative) environment in classrooms?
  • Can we (should we) use common learning outcomes in multi-section courses?

The answer to all three questions is ‘yes,’ if (and only if) we use learning outcomes in the context of pedagogy and not as self-evaluation.
