Beyond the group project: The pedagogies behind student collaborations

October 1, 2013, 12-2 pm

Presented by:
Jeff Allred, Department of English
Lawrence Kowerski, Department of Classics

Our presenters, and our discussion, will consider questions like:

  • Why do instructors choose to have students collaborate
    on certain components of coursework?
  • What kind of work lends itself well to collaboration?
  • What preparation makes for successful collaboration among students?
  • How should collaborative work be assessed and graded?

Jeff Allred will discuss several group projects from a recent course, “Novel Hacks,” in which students collaboratively edited, produced, or generated data from novels.

Lawrence Kowerski will discuss a set of resource pages his students created using Google Sites. This single project involved both undergraduate and graduate student groups, and Prof. Kowerski will highlight strategies for working with both levels.
