Welcome to the President’s website for Hunter College, the largest campus of the City University of New York, one of the oldest public colleges in America, and a national leader in urban public education. This site is designed to give you a flavor of the rich and varied life of our College and to learn about some of the exciting and innovative programs and resources Hunter has to offer.
Each of Hunter’s nearly 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students attends one of five schools within the College. The largest is the School of Arts & Sciences, which offers outstanding programs across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Hunter’s professional arts programs train many of New York’s best young writers, dancers, and artists. Our science programs are renowned for sending record numbers of women and minorities into careers in science and medicine. And students of social science can now supplement their coursework with certificate programs in public policy and human rights, offered through the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.
Graduates of Hunter’s four nationally renowned professional schools – the School of Education, the Silberman Schoolof Social Work, the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, and the CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College – become the teachers, social workers, nurses, and health care professionals who dedicate their lives to serving New York City and the nation. They are the embodiment of the Hunter College motto: Mihi Cura Futuri – the Care of the Future Is Mine.
Hunter also administers Hunter College Elementary School, Hunter College High School, and Manhattan Hunter Science High School. This extraordinary educational structure gives Hunter a unique position among American public colleges. We are an institution that educates students from kindergarten through graduate school.
Because of its historic commitment to educational opportunity regardless of race, class or ethnicity, Hunter is one of the most diverse colleges in the nation. Most Hunter students are the first in their family to attend college. They come from some 150 countries and speak more than 100 languages. They choose Hunter, often over other top-rated schools, because we offer a first-class education with a world-class faculty at an affordable price. That is one of the many reasons why The Princeton Review and USA Today consistently rank Hunter among the nation’s Best Value Public Colleges.
Hunter’s location is unbeatable, too – in the heart of New York City, within easy reach of Broadway theaters, Lincoln Center, internationally renowned museums, the United Nations and Manhattan’s many other famous attractions. And we are partners in a consortium of world-class hospitals and research institutions, all just steps away from our main campus.
We welcome your interest in Hunter College. We are confident you will be impressed by our remarkable combination of diversity, quality, and affordability. And we hope you find the President’s website a useful resource – and a place to visit often.
