Juella Baltonado, Muse Scholar, Class of 2015

Tell us about yourself:

I was born in Cebu, Philippines, and at 15 moved to New York. At Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens, I began to be interested in creative writing, psychology, arts and crafts, and most important, music. I was president of three clubs and vice president of another, and started two with the help of my friends.

After receiving the Muse Scholarship, I decided to study my main passion, music. Besides being a part of several ensembles at Hunter, I have sung in the chorus of the opera "The Counts of Hoffman" as a participant in the Martina Arroyo Foundation's Prelude to Performance program.

How has your scholarship helped you?

The scholarship allowed me to have courage in pursuing my passion in music.
I was exposed to not only professional music performances such as concerts in Carnegie Hall, but several other fields of art as well. It revealed the inner workings about how art is produced and financed in the real world. On a social level, not only have I made connections to professional institutions, I've also made close friends easily.
