There are many scholarship and honors program opportunities for high achieving incoming students. Merit scholarships, special advising, seminar classes, and priority registration are just some of the benefits offered. Most of these opportunities require a supplemental application during the admissions process - check out the information below to get started. 



There are two different honors tracks available for incoming freshmen, the Macaulay Honors College and the Freshman Honors Scholar Programs.

Macaulay Honors College

A University wide honors program for incoming freshmen, Macaulay students will be dually enrolled in both Hunter and the Macaulay Honors College.The program combines the close-knit community of a small college with the vast resources of a major research university. Scholars receive the following benefits:

  • Individualized mentoring by distinguished faculty members and dedicated academic advisors 
  • Full gap-merit scholarship (New York State residents)
  • Priority access to campus housing
  • Seminar classes which allow our students enriching opportunities to work and learn together while they develop a deeper understanding of New York's rich cultural and intellectual history
  • All students will complete either an internship and/or a study abroad program

How to apply to Macaulay Honors College

The Fall 2022 deadline is November 16, 2021. Students should file a Macaulay Honors application (not the general freshmen application) through the City University of New York  and list Hunter College as their campus of choice. All students will automatically be reviewed for both Macaulay admission and general admission to Hunter College.

Freshmen Honors Scholar Programs

The Honors Scholar Program offers students a variety of advantages and support that can help create an extraordinary learning experience at Hunter College. Freshmen Honors Scholars receive the following benefits:

  • Significant merit scholarships
  • Learning communities
  • Dedicated academic advisors and faculty directors
  • Priority registration for classes
  • Freshman year priority access to campus housing

There are six Freshmen Honors Scholar Programs at Hunter:

  • Athena Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Daedalus Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in Computer Science.
  • Muse Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in Visual & Performing Arts, Film, Media, and Creative Writing.
  • Nursing Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in Leadership in Nursing.
  • Roosevelt Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in Policy, Social Sciences, Law, and Civic Life. 
  • Yalow Honors Scholar Program - For students interested in  Scientific Research and Pre-Health.

How to apply to Freshmen Scholar Programs

  • The Fall 2022 scholar application will be available in late October of 2021 - the deadline is Feb 1, 2022.
  • All students should first submit their admissions application (general or Macaulay) to Hunter College.
  • 24-48 hours after you submit your admissions application, you will be able to access the freshman scholar program application.

Different scholarships are awarded each year to incoming students who have performed exceptionally well at their previous institutions. Scholarships range in amounts and provide various programming opportunities throughout students' careers at Hunter College.
