GUARDIAN OF THE WEB
Attorney Parry Aftab, a 1981 valedictorian, has become executive director of Cyberangels, reports The Star-Ledger of New Jersey. Cyberangels works "to prevent online victimization."  The profile of Aftab also runs in the Sunday Express. 

WINS LANGUAGE AWARD
Newsday interviews Nivea Cavallo, now head of the Francis Lewis High School's foreign language department, which won the 2000 James E. Allen Award from the state Association of Foreign Language Teachers.

DISPELLING SOCIAL STIGMAS
Denise Charles, a graduate of the Hunter College School of Social Work, is interviewed for a Newsday profile.  Charles works with the mentally ill and says she hopes to dispel the stigma and stereotypes they live with.

LECTURE IN DELAWARE
The Chester County Press profiles Anthony DeCurtis, who gave a lecture, "Sights and Sounds: Linda McCartney, Rolling Stone and the 60s," at the Delaware Art Museum.  DeCurtis is a contributing editor of Rolling Stone and former music critic for National Public Radio.

READING TEACHER'S AWARD
Ann Heller, reading director of the Uniondale School district, was recently honored by the New York State Reading Association at its annual conference in Syracuse, reports Newsday.

FROM TEACHER TO PERFORMER
The New York Times profiles Susan Jeremy, who used her experiences as an elementary school teacher to write and perform a one-woman show called "P.S. 69" at TheaterStudio in New York.  The coverage appeared in its popular "Public Lives" column.

ART IN VERMONT
An extensive interview with Robert McBride, an MFA graduate, runs in Vermont Business Magazine.  McBride is the founder and director of the Rockingham Arts and Museum Project, near Bellows Falls, Vermont.

THANKFUL FOR EDUCATION
"I went to Hunter and I probably would not have gotten a college degree if it were not for CUNY," says Michael McSweeney in a Newsday profile.  McSweeney now works as director of legislative and community affairs at LaGuardia Community College.

QUEENS AUTHOR
Steve Reichstein's new book, Discovering Queens! A Useful Guide to Queens, New York, gets coverage in Newsday.  A former city planner, Reichstein presents an overview of Queens's ethnic restaurants, recreational areas, and neighborhoods.

RESNIK SINGS WEILL
Regina Resnik's performance of composer Kurt Weill's songs at the Kaye Playhouse receives notices in the Daily News and The New York Times.  Ms. Resnik's collection of Weill-related art and film is concurrently exhibited at the Leubsdorf Art Gallery, notes the Times.

HONORED BY THE "Y"
The Riverdale Press reports that Diane Rubin is named Guest of Honor at the Riverdale YM-YWHA's annual benefit dinner.  Ms. Rubin, who earned her social work degree at Hunter, focuses on such issues as women's health care, day care, and rape crisis.

BLACK HISTORY READING
Poet and playwright Sonia Sanchez gave a talk and poetry reading at New Jersey City University in honor of Black History Month, reports the Jersey Journal.  Sanchez is also the subject of an interview with African American Review.

ONE MAN'S ESCAPE
Jay Sommer, a Holocaust survivor and author of Journey to the Golden Door, talks with the Cranford Chronicle (New Jersey) about his wartime experiences.  Sommer, a native of Czechoslovakia, recalls his religious persecution while growing up and his escape from the Chepel concentration camp.

ASTHMA INITIATIVE
Caribbean Life writes about Community Health Education graduate Astrid Wilkie, manager of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, in an article about their recent educational initiative to combat childhood asthma in the community.

JUICE MAVEN
Fruit and vegetable juice entrepreneur Arden Zinn is the subject of a major profile in the Atlanta Constitution.  Owner of Arden's Garden, Zinn advocates avoiding foods that don't "come out of the ground or off a tree."
