Prolific Latina Author Nicholasa Mohr offers Personal Reflections at Annual Bella Abzug Lecture

Dr. Nicholasa Mohr will be the featured speaker at the 2001
Annual Bella Abzug Lecture in Women's Studies at Hunter College. The title of her talk is
"Reflections of the Big Mango: Growing Up Latina in the USA." A staged reading by the Rubí Theater Company of Mohr's play, "I Never Even Seen My Father," will follow her
talk. After the performance, Mohr and the company's artistic director, José Garcia, will answer questions from the audience. A reception will follow.
The Annual Bella Abzug Lecture in Women's Studies at Hunter College was established as part of the Women's Studies Program in
1984 to honor Ms. Abzug, an esteemed alumna and former U.S. Congresswoman. The lecture is funded by the Hunter College Office of the Provost and co-sponsored by the Department of
Black and Puerto Rican Studies. The lecture series' speakers have included Gloria Steinem, Ntozake Shange, Maxine Hong Kingston and Ruth Messinger. |

Dr. Nicholasa Mohr was born in Manhattan's El Barrio
and raised in the Bronx. A past winner of the American Book Award and many other literary honors, she is the author of numerous short story collections, plays, essays and books for children, young adults and adults. Among her titles are
In Nueva York, El Bronx Remembered and La Canción del Coquí. With a 1999 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, she and the Rubí Theater Company
are working on a musical adaptation of her novel, Nilda, cited as an "outstanding book" by The New York Times. The Rubí Theater Company
is an ensemble of artists, writers and educators performing works by its members and by other Latino/Latina writers living in the United States. |
