Major Exploration
Your major is an essential part of your liberal arts education. Your major shows the world that you have a significant understanding of a particular subject, it may focus your direction towards a career or even further academic study in graduate school. There's no doubt it's an important decision and it may seem overwhelming, so take some time to find a major that will inspire you and support your intellectual and career goals. Advising can help by sharing the information you need to make the best choice.
How Do I Choose a Major?
- The Hunter College Catalog has a complete list of majors and describes their requirements. Visit the Programs of Study page.
- Consult the professionals, on and off campus. Advisors are among your best personal resources to help guide your eventual major choice.
- Pre-professional advisors help choose the best majors and courses to pursue competitive fields such as Health, Law, and Business.
- When meeting the Hunter Core Requirement (or GER) choose courses that will help you explore majors of interest.
- Family and friends can be great resources too. Do you know someone who works or studies in a field that interests you? Consider asking them how they got their start.
- Plan career-relevant academic experiences such as internships, study abroad, work experience, volunteering, and building a network of contacts.
