My Research

My research focuses on aesthetics and musical performance in the Arab world and Mediterranean. I have conducted ethnographic field research in Syria, Morocco, Spain, and France. Most of my research explores the interrelationships among music, emotion and sentiment, ideas of modernity, and the politics of performance. My recent work also focuses on the history of piracy and navigation as well as culinary cultures and the circulation of recipes in and around the Arab world and Mediterranean basin.
