Research involves voice and culture, kinesthetics and ethnopoetics of sound, soundscape studies, and musical anthropology focusing on the music, dance and theater of Bali with other recent projects in Hungary and Romania, Mexico and Egypt. Recent fieldwork in Indonesia has been supported by grants from the Ford Foundation and Asian Cultural Council for an ongoing repatriation project involving research and publishing of early twentieth-century Balinese music and films. The first of the series, Bali 1928: Gamelan Gong Kebyar, was released in 2009 and the article can be downloaded from http://www.arbiterrecords.com/catalogworld.html along with archival film excerpts. All five volumes will be released as CDs in the U.S. and in Indonesia as cassettes and DVDs.
Served for six years as chair and remaining an ongoing member of the Ethics Committee of the Society for Ethnomusicology and organized (in cooperation with Anthony Seeger) two panels on "Repatriation of Audio-Visual Archives in the 21st Century" at the Society's 2010 Annual Meeting.
Voices in Bali: Energies and Perceptions in Vocal Music and Dance Theater was published by Wesleyan University Press. Other publications include the journal Asian Music, numerous entries for the Oxford International Encyclopedia of Dance covering traditional and contemporary Indonesian performing arts and four years as Assistant Editor of the Journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Commissioned by Indonesian director Sardono W. Kusumo to collaborate as composer and solo vocalist on his dance theater production of Maha Buta in Geneva, Switzerland and at Festival Cervantino, Mexico, as well as his film, The Sorceress of Dirah, in Indonesia.
