Prof. Ida Susser Awarded NSF Grant for the Project "Rethinking Social Change: The Squares Movement in Barcelona and Paris.”

Professor Ida Susser has been awarded a 3 year grant from the NSF for the project "Rethinking Social Change: The Squares Movement in Barcelona and Paris.” With significant funding·over three years, Susser and·her team of post-doctoral fellows and graduate students will conduct ethnographic research on urban social movements in Barcelona and Paris. They will explore the social and temporal dynamics that shape the “Squares" movement, known in the U.S. as Occupy, in Paris and Barcelona in order to provide an account of contemporary efforts at “progressive” social transformation. They will analyze how different conceptions of time shape political action, the social composition of activist groups, and the material experiences of occupation. The project asks whether the Squares produces broader shifts in political thought and action, particularly with respect to how these movements might help to amplify the needs of diverse subaltern groups in the public sphere. The researchers will follow selected grassroots organizations and new political parties which have formed in the aftermath of the Squares movement to assess the impact of the events on national discourse and to determine in what ways such events may have strengthened or undermined progressive politics.
