Culturally Responsive Teaching in the Classroom Workshop

Friday, March 10th; 5:30 – 8:30pm Location: Samuels Teaching Studio at Lincoln Center; 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, 7th Floor This three-hour session will introduce concepts of cultural competency, culturally responsive teaching, and social justice. This session will emphasize skill development and group sharing around having difficult conversations on social justice issues and identities in their classrooms. We will focus on the skill of identifying and managing internal and external triggers when it comes to cultural competency and how triggers often prevent us as educators from creating a safe space for our students, and/or navigating difficult conversations that arise among colleagues. Objectives of the session: 1. Participants will understand concepts of cultural competency and culturally responsive teaching. 2. Participants will reflect on their own personal preferences, biases, and triggers, especially around issues of diversity and identity as they relate to their work as teachers. 3. Participants will understand how their personal preferences and biases affect relationship building with young people. 4. Participants will build skills and confidence in having conversations with their students and/or colleagues around difficult topics they’ve encountered in the classroom/their schools.
