The mission of Art History at Hunter is to train the next generation of scholars, curators, dealers and arts professionals with the concrete skills and intellectual creativity necessary to compete in any multicultural art capital in the world. Art History works in conjunction with studio and the exhibition galleries on both the undergraduate and graduate levels to foster integrated instruction that is unique to Hunter College and its educational model. We are committed to a public education that competes with the top private universities by offering access to leading scholars in the field, small class sizes, rigorous requirements for research and writing, a broad curriculum, and the incomparable cultural resources of New York City. We uphold longstanding methods of art history, while encouraging students to develop new theoretical approaches based on first-hand examination of objects and informed analysis of critical texts.

At Hunter we believe that art history is most effectively taught in a diverse environment where students encounter working artists in their classrooms and are exposed to different ways of seeing, writing, and speaking about visual culture. The art history curricula and gallery program provides specific training in research and writing, contemporary art criticism, curatorial skills, the cataloguing of objects, education, art management, and non-profit fund-raising.
