Paul Ramirez Jonas
Professor of Art / Time-based media

The themes of time, expiration and memory are central to Paul Ramirez Jonas’ work. In his projects what looks like invention is but, re-enactment, and what seems exploration is but walking in someone else’s footsteps. However, not unlike a musician reading from a score or an actor performing from a play, the pre-existence of a text does not preclude passion, enthusiasm, humor and new meanings. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University. His honors include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the International Studio Program in Sweden, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts, among others. Ramirez Jonas has upcoming an upcoming exhibition at The
Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut. Solo exhibitions include a survey at Ikon Gallery (UK) and Cornerhouse (UK); LFL Gallery (NYC); Roger Björkholmen (Sweden); and Postmasters Gallery (NYC). Group exhibitions in the Gallery for Contemporary Art Leipzig (Germany); Shanghai Biennial; P.S.1 (NYC); Seoul Biennial (Korea); The Whitechapel (UK); Irish Museum of Modern Art (Ireland); Künstlerhaus (Austria); Johannesburg Biennale (South Africa); Exit Art (NYC); The New Museum (NYC). Has taught at R.I.S.D, Cal Arts, Columbia Universtiy, New York Universtiy, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Profiled in ArtForum, Zing, ARTnews, New York Times, Art in America and others. He has built permanent projects in Cambridge, MA and a permanent public sculpture for the Hudson River Park, New York City.
