Dear MA Students,
This is friendly reminder that we'll be offering mid-program examinations at the end of the summer. The Language Exam will be on Wednesday, August 27th (7pm-9pm in 1527 HN) and the Comprehensive Exam will be on Thursday, August 28th (7pm-9pm in 1527 HN). These will be graded in time to register by September 3.
If you have not already done so, please sign up for these exams by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org. For the language exam, let me know what language you intend to test in. There is no deadline to sign up- just do so by the morning of the day of the test so that we know how many to administer.
We recommend that you take these tests as early in your graduate career as possible. You must pass both before you can register for more than 15 credits.
The language and comp exams are offered once per semester. The Fall 2014 test dates are still being finalized, but will most likely be given on October 1 and October 15. I'll send out an email and they will also be posted to the departmental calendar, viewable on the Art & Art History website.
For more information, please see below.
Foreign Language Proficiency
The program requires that each student demonstrate proficiency in one of the major languages of art historical research: German, Italian, Spanish, or French. This exam consists of approximately 500 words of an art-historical text, which students have one hour to translate. This exam may be completed with the aid of a dictionary. The exam is given in the Fall and Spring semesters. Typically, students take this exam in the first or second semester of enrollment. Sample texts are available in the Zabar Art Library.
