Freya Powell's solo exhibition at Arts Santa Mònica in Barcelona, I'll smile and I'm not sad... and other present pasts opens May 7th, as part of an series of exhibitions, titled White Under Black, curated by Assumpta Bassas and Joana Masò.

The video and audio installations of the first exhibition by Freya Powell in Barcelona invite us to meditate on the links between memory and archiving, recording, repertoire and traces of history. This exhibition is a taut wire between the memory of Americans sentenced to death, the memory of the Second World War, world maps under different colonial history and the artist’s own memory. This thread is questioning our relationship not only with the voices and the words archived, but with those that we listen to, receive and record. Sara Ahmed spoke of affective economies and Judith Butler has written about linking practice on works by Bracha L.Ettinger who work in collecting testimonies on the border of war. A quote by María Zambrano lead us to think that Freya Powell’s work points at the relationship between otherness and piety as 'knowing how to deal adequately with the other'.
