This project is organized by DAAD New York in cooperation with Deutsches Haus at NYU and features works by seven DAAD alumni and current DAAD grant holders: Lee Arnold, Daniel Berwanger, Donna Huanca, Alexi KukuljevicReiner LeistDavid Rice, and Elsa Westreicher

The art of freedom: 7 uneasy positions investigates the possibility of considering, processing, and actualizing concepts of freedom. The art of freedom, similar to the art of living, is a personal construct that might be found through individual endeavor and manifests itself in very different forms for different people. Rather than creating a coherent whole, the exhibition asks questions and looks at the various facets of the loaded word freedom in order to investigate their meanings. The positions of these seven artists are layered and not necessarily at ease with the symbols of freedom, yet they create a platform upon which to investigate one’s individual conception of what it means to speak of freedom.

the art of freedom: 7 uneasy positions was curated by Julia Lammer and Tatiana Leon.
