Cisneros Initiative for Latin American Art
These past two years have seen modern and contemporary Latin American Art take center stage at Hunter College. In new courses and exhibitions, special lectures and seminars, Hunter and the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are collaborating to present and study Latin American visual art in its most experimental forms. With exhibitions of previously unseen works from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, leading scholars and artists gathering at Hunter, and a host of innovative programs and activities, Latin American art has a new, vibrant home at Hunter and in New York City. Initiatives launched since 2011 include the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics Program, SOMA-Hunter Exchange, and new courses and opportunities for the interdisciplinary study of Latin American Art.
The Department of Art and Art History at Hunter College pursues study and practice in three distinct areas—Art History, Studio Art and the Galleries. Within this setting, students can study Latin American Art by taking courses in historical and critical studies, organizing exhibitions, and participating in special programs and lectures. The urban, international context and the department’s dynamic structure encourage students to engage with Latin American art in dynamic and rigorous ways.
