Ann and Joseph Landau Award. This award is designed to support graduate study in social work with an emphasis on gerontology and/or mental health. Awards in recent years have ranged from $500 to $1,000, and we have generally been able to make one award. Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by a faculty member; in either case, a complete application will consist of a personal statement by the student outlining his or her interest in social work, gerontology, and/or mental health, a copy of the student's transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Submission of nominees are due in May.  Date: TBA

Ida and Daniel Lang Fellowship in the Humanities. The fellowship, normally in the amount of $2,000, is granted each year to a Hunter College graduate student who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and promise in the study of history, English literature, Romance languages, music, or theatre. The Lang Fellow will be selected from those students nominated by departmental graduate advisors by a committee appointed by the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. 
Eligibility: continuing or entering students, attending part-time or full-time. Graduate programs may decline to nominate any student. They may also choose to nominate more than one outstanding student. Submission of nominees due in May. Date: Date: May 12, 2008

Nominations should include the following:

1. A letter of nomination by the Graduate Advisor, including the student's ID number, address, e-mail address, and telephone number.
2. One letter of recommendation by a faculty member.
3. A brief statement of intellectual interest by the nominee.
4. A copy of the student's undergraduate transcript.
5. A copy of the student's graduate (Hunter College) transcript (if applicable).

Mina S. Rees Graduate Scholarship in Sciences and Mathematics.  In keeping with the donor's request, a single award to a graduate student either enrolled in or about to enter a Ph.D. Program in one of the natural sciences or mathematics at the City University of New York is usually made. With permission of the donor, two or more awards have been made in some years. Submission of nominees due in May. Date: May 5, 2008

The criteria for selection are:

a) Promise of scientific professionalism, drive, incisiveness, originality.
b) Promise of competence as a teacher; solidity and span of subject matter, knowledge and articulateness.
c) Aspirations as a cultured person -commitment, breadth and genuineness of intellectual interest.

The nominations should include:

1. Student's degree program and level.
2. A list of the student's publications and/or presentations at scientific meetings.
3. A letter of recommendation from the student's sponsor or advisor. (If that person is a member of this Committee, there must be an additional letter of recommendation from another faculty member.)
4. As soon as the awardee is chosen, a copy of her or his Social Security card is needed,  so that the award check can be prepared. (Because of new regulations in the Business Office, no award checks may be written unless a copy of the awardee's Social Security card is submitted.)

Shuster Awards for outstanding Master's degree theses in the amount of $100 each.  The nomination packet should consist of a letter of nomination; a one-page summary of the thesis; an evaluation of the thesis by the thesis sponsor, including comments on the merit of the nominated thesis compared to other theses recently completed in your program; and a copy of the thesis. A thesis that has not yet been given formal final approval by its sponsor may be nominated and considered for this award, if a copy of the final draft accompanies the nomination Submission of nominees due in May.   Date: May 12, 2008


Ruth Weintraub Award. This award is designed to help the College attract and keep talented students in its graduate programs in the Social Sciences by offering scholarship support for graduate study. Awards in recent years have ranged from $500 to $1,500.  Entering graduate students or BA/MA/MS candidates entering the MA or MS phase of their work may be nominated. Letters of nomination from the Graduate Advisor should generally be accompanied by a photocopy of the student's application for admission to the graduate program or by other evidence of outstanding performance. Submission of nominees due in May.  Date: May 12, 2008

Harold Amos Memorial Award for Science Research Excellence: This award was created to encourage young investigators from underrepresented minorities to pursue excellence in their careers as biomedical research scientists, as well as developing succeeding cohorts of such scientists.  One award is granted each year to a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in one of the biomedical sciences.  Nominations are submitted to Elsa Brunswick at the Gene Center.  Submission of nominees due May 12, 2008.
