Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary Publishes 'Most-Read' Op-Ed in Sunday New York Times
Professor Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, of the Psychology Department, recently wrote an article on teenage anxiety for the op-ed page of the Sunday edition of the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/14/opinion/sunday/smartphone-addiction-teenagers-stress.html . The article, headlined Taking Away the Phone Won't Solve Our Teenagers' Problems, was the 'most-read' op-ed article of the day. In it, Dr. Dennis-Tiwary notes that 'teenagers are struggling with anxiety more than any other problem, and perhaps more than ever before,' adding that 'there's a good chance that it is anxiety that is driving teenagers (and the rest of us) to escape into screens as a way to flee fears.' In order to address this problem, she suggests, we should not only 'devote resources to making smartphones less addictive, but we should devote even more resources to addressing the public health crisis of anxiety that is causing teenagers so much suffering and driving them to seek relief in the ultimate escape machines.'
