Professor Diana Reiss' Work with Dolphins Informs Rehabilitation Game for Stroke Patients

A book written by Dr. Diana Reiss of the Psychology Department, "The Dophin In the Mirror," helped to inform the design of a computer game, "Bandit's Shark Showdown," which has been used in rehabilitation of stroke patients. The game permits the player to "move" a dolphin through ocean water by moving parts of the body that have been affected by stroke, so that the dolphin "mirrors" the player's motions. This encourages the player to move the body in less constricted ways than is required in traditional physical therapy, which may lead to a more comprehensive rehabilitation for the patient. The convergence of game design, neuroscience and medical application is discussed in an article in the November issue of The New Yorker http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/11/23/helping-hand-annals-of-medicine-karen-russell
