Study by Dr. Olorunseun Ogunwobi Reveals New Prognostic Biological Marker for Prostate Cancer

In a study recently accepted for publication in Translational Oncology (led by Dr. Olorunseum O. Ogunwobi of Hunter's Biological Sciences Department, along with Dr. Jong Park, of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida), the clinical significance of a molecule called miR-1207-3p in prostate cancer was investigated in 404 patients. The study revealed that miR-1207-3p is a new prognostic biological marker in prostate cancer. The researchers observed that while the molecule significantly correlated with prostate cancer recurrence, overall death, and prostate cancer-specific death in the study population, prostate tumor tissue expression in Black males was significantly less than in White males. Consequently, it is possible that miR-1207-3p may play some role in the widely-acknowledged racial disparity noted in prostate cancer. The research group led by Dr. Ogunwobi is continuing to investigate this possibility and to determine the expression profile of miR-1207-3p in normal prostate tissue as compared to prostate tumor tissue, and the possibility of utilizing miR-1207-3p for clinical applications in prostate cancer.
