HUNTER SOFTBALL PLAYERS PITCH-IN AT NYC PARKS DEPARTMENT NGWSD EVENT

New York, NY – Members of the Hunter Softball team volunteered some of their time recently to take part in the New York City Park Department’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day event that was held at Chelsea Recreation Center on February 23, 2008.

Junior Catherine Alves and sophomore Stephanie Alves (pictured above) along with junior Jennifer Damroth and sophomore Jacqueline Frank participated the event that saw 78 children take part in activities including soccer, lacrosse, softball, yoga and basketball. The Hunter student-athletes ran the softball portion of the event and worked with kids ranging from 6 to 12 years old. “It was a lot of fun, and by the end of it, we had every girl in there calling softball their favorite sport”, stated Catherine Alves.

Participants were also treated to two motivational speeches from 1986 Gold Medalist, Gay Hemphill, and Joan Roche who is a NBA Executive.

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
