August 11, 2010

Incoming Freshman and Transfer Students were invited to attend a Summer Welcome Event where they learned about several vital services available to them at Hunter College such as advising, Instructional Computing and Information Technology, and Student Services.  The students also met their team leaders, the Black Male Initiative Coordinator, the Consultant to the Black Male Initiative, and the Dean for Compliance and Diversity at Hunter College.  The event concluded with a time for students to form bonds with each other over dinner.

 

September 2010

Students from the Hunter College Black Male Initiative helped seniors from the Validus High School Preparatory Academy prepare for the SAT by teaching lessons on critical reasoning, essay writing, and math.

 

September 15, 2010

The members of the Hunter BMI met with New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie-the councilman representing the 27th District of New York City.  Councilman Comrie discussed how he came to be a Councilman, elaborated on his specific role within the Council, reiterated the importance of youth to be politically active, and articulated his support for continued funding to the Black Male Initiative.

 

November 3, 2010

Hunter BMI student, Michael Patterson, lead the first Speak Out! for the Black Male Inititative at Hunter College.  Michael lead a discussion about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the morality of the two wars, and the ways in which the US military are recruiting for them.

The Hunter College Black Male Initiative, under the leadership of Lorenzo Daley, donated more than 70 books to an outstanding mentorship program known as Youth-At-Risk!

 

February 10, 2011

Dean John Rose organized a tremendously successful Convocation to kick off Black History Month at Hunter College. For the 2011 academic year, Dr. Peniel Joseph served as the keynote speaker.

Peniel E. Joseph is Professor of History at Tufts University and the author of the award-winning Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America and Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack Obama as well as editor of The Black Power Movement: Rethinking the Civil Rights-Black Power Era and Neighborhood Rebels: Black Power at the Local Level.

 

 

On May 12, 2011 Professor Cornell West spoke about the recent book written by the late Manning Marable entitled, "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention". This was a momentous occasion for BMI student Corey Johnson because Corey is particularly fond of Malcolm X and prides himself in being a, "Malcolm X" historian.

 

The Hunter College BMI took part in a community service event on May 7 at the North Presbyterian Church in Harlem, NY. We donated a full box of non-perishable food and helped to serve the, "Community Meal" for members of the local community.

 

The Hunter College Black Male Initiative held a dynamic event with Wes Moore on May 11, 2011. Wes Moore is a Rhodes Scholar, White House Fellow, and Corporate Executive at Citi Bank. Most importantly, Wes is a New York Times best selling author who cares deeply about the state of young men as evidenced through his book entitled, "The Other Wes Moore".
