This program provides you with up to 120 hours of professional training in translation and interpretation techniques. Our skilled instructors have the educational background and the real-world experience to best prepare you for work in this exciting and growing field. The courses run at night from our convenient Manhattan location and the program can be completed in a year. This is a non-credit certificate program. Institutional Member: American Translators Association, Society of Medical Interpreters.

Admission Requirements:
Fluency in both English and Spanish is needed, including strong writing skills in both languages. Students must take a placement test and pass an oral interview. Tuition payment plans are available. To apply and take the admissions test, please attend one of the scheduled open houses.  Open House listings are located under the "Open Houses" listing to the right of your screen.

Tuition:
Certificate in Translation Studies - English to Spanish: $2800
Certificate in Interpretation Studies: $2800

Many businesses, unions, trade associations, and government programs will reimburse students for the cost of this certificate program. Course Requirements for the Certificate in Translation Studies:

This is ideal for native or fluent Spanish speakers with strong English language skills. The certificate will provide a better understanding of the employment possibilities in the field. There is an emerging market in the Spanish-speaking world as the Spanish speaking population continues to grow. Among those are: translation agencies, newspapers, magazines, law firms, financial and publishing companies.

Course Requirements for the Certificate in Interpretation Studies:

This is ideal for Spanish - English bilingual students.  The certificate concentrates on the two major fields for employment in today's world: legal and medical settings. Students will be prepared to understand the many settings that require interpretation such as courts, law firms, hospitals an clinics.

Course requirements for the Combined Certificate in Translation and Interpretation Studies: $3,700

This ideal for students that want to explore the worlds of translation and interpretation.  The students will receive instruction on both fields that can expand and/or combine their work opportunities, including translation agencies, newspapers, magazines, law firms, financial institutional and publishing companies.  Also, students will be prepared to understand the many settings that require interpretation such as courts, law firms, hospitals and clinics.

Course Status
If enrollment for a course does not reach a required level, the course will be canceled. However, when maximum enrollment is reached, the course will be closed immediately and the names of interested registrants will be put on a wait list and notified on a “first come” basis if an opening occurs. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Grades
Students’ progress is measured through examinations, research and writing assignments, and classroom participation. A grade of A, B, or C is required in each course certification. A passing grade is 73=B.

Attendance Requirements
Students are required to attend all the classes and be on time. If absence occurs, the student is responsible for making up missed assignments. The instructor maintains and submits attendance records for each student.

Retake Policy
If a student fails a course, CE will send him or her a letter to retake the course, free of charge, within one year. This privilege can only be exercised once for the duration of the program. If a student is unable to complete or has to drop a course, please state the reason in writing and send to Continuing Education. With all retakes, the registration fee must be paid, if applicable, when registering.

Continuing Education’s certification programs are offered for no college credit. A certificate is awarded to students who successfully meet the requirements explained in the CE bulletin.
