Translation and/or Interpretation

One of the fastest-growing needs of the New York metro community is for qualified and professionally trained interpreters and translators. If you are fluent in English and Spanish and looking to add a skill to your resume, then the Certificate in Translation and/or Certificate in Interpretation may be right for you.

This program provides you with up to 120 hours of professional training in translation and interpretation techniques. Our skilled instructors have the educational background and the real-world experience to best prepare you for work in this exciting and growing field. The courses run at night from our convenient Manhattan location and the program can be completed in a year. This is a non-credit certificate program. Institutional Member: American Translators Association, Society of Medical Interpreters.

Admission Requirements:
Fluency in both English and Spanish is needed, including strong writing skills in both languages. Students must take a placement test and pass an oral interview. Tuition payment plans are available. To apply and take the admissions test, please attend one of the scheduled open houses.  Open House listings are located under the "Open Houses" listing to the right of your screen.
Students cannot register just for a few classes; they need to enroll in the whole program.

Tuition:
Certificate in Translation Studies - English to Spanish: $3000
Certificate in Interpretation Studies: $3000
Combined Certificate in Translation and Interpretation Studies $4000

Many businesses, unions, trade associations, and government programs will reimburse students for the cost of this certificate program. Several types of payment vouchers are also accepted for payment of tuition in this program. Please contact Milena Timerman (milena.timerman@hunter.cuny.edu) with questions regarding payment.

Course Requirements for the Certificate in Translation Studies:

This is ideal for native or fluent Spanish speakers with strong English language skills. The certificate will provide a better understanding of the employment possibilities in the field. There is an emerging market in the Spanish-speaking world as the Spanish speaking population continues to grow. Among those are: translation agencies, newspapers, magazines, law firms, financial and publishing companies.

  • Fundamentals of Interpretation (Emphasis on Medical and Legal Settings)
  • Translation Studies I (English to Spanish)
  • Translation Studies II (English to Spanish) prerequisite Translation 1

Course Requirements for the Certificate in Interpretation Studies:

This is ideal for Spanish - English bilingual students.  The certificate concentrates on the two major fields for employment in today's world: legal and medical settings. Students will be prepared to understand the many settings that require interpretation such as courts, law firms, hospitals and clinics.

  • Introduction to Translation Studies (English to Spanish)
  • Fundamentals of Interpretation (Emphasis on Medical and Legal Settings)
  • Interpreting in Medical Settings, (prerequisites Intro to translation & Fundamental of Interpretation)
  • Interpreting in Legal Settings, (prerequisites Intro to translation & Fundamental of Interpretation)
  • Elective (can be taken at any time)
  • Elective (can be taken at any time)

Course requirements for the Combined Certificate in Translation and Interpretation Studies: $4000

This combined certificate is ideal for students that want to explore the worlds of translation and interpretation.  The students will receive instruction on both fields that can expand and/or combine their work opportunities, including translation agencies, newspapers, magazines, law firms, financial institutional and publishing companies.  Also, students will be prepared to understand the many settings that require interpretation such as courts, law firms, hospitals and clinics.

  • Fundamentals of Interpretation Studies (Emphasis on Medical and Legal Settings)
  • Translation Studies I (English to Spanish)
  • Translation Studies II (English to Spanish)

Course Status
If enrollment for a course does not reach a required level, the course will be canceled. However, when maximum enrollment is reached, the course will be closed immediately and the names of interested registrants will be put on a wait list and notified on a “first come” basis if an opening occurs. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Grades
Students’ progress is measured through examinations, research and writing assignments, and classroom participation. A grade of A, B, or C is required in each course certification. A passing grade = B

Attendance Requirements
Students are required to attend all the classes and be on time. If absence occurs, the student is responsible for making up missed assignments. The instructor maintains and submits attendance records for each student.

Retake Policy
If a student fails a course, CE will send him or her a letter to retake the course, free of charge, within one year. This privilege can only be exercised once for the duration of the program. If a student is unable to complete or has to drop a course, please state the reason in writing and send to Continuing Education. With all retakes, the registration fee must be paid, if applicable, when registering.

Continuing Education’s certification programs are offered for no college credit. A certificate is awarded to students who successfully meet the requirements explained in the CE bulletin.

 

Continuing Education Certificate Programs are part-time non-credited courses and therefore we do not issue student visas.  To apply for a student visa, students must be enrolled in a full-time credited college program or an ESL studies program.  For more information on Continuing Education's ESL program please click here: International English Language Institute
