Senior Citizen Auditor Program - Frequently Asked Questions

I’m a Senior Citizen and New York Resident, may I audit a class at Hunter?
Yes! CUNY permits Senior Citizens who are residents of New York State (individuals aged 60 and over who are able to verify age and residency) to audit undergraduate CUNY courses on a space available basis.

How much does it cost to audit a course?
While course tuition is not charged to senior citizen auditors they are responsible for various fees currently amounting to approximately $80.00 per semester. (The payment of these fees does not entitle auditors to other campus programs and services other than the courses being auditing.).

How do I apply to audit Hunter Courses? Are there specific criteria/requirements/deadlines to access the auditing option?
You can apply for the senior citizen auditing program by using this link: https://owl.hunter.cuny.edu/ords/f?p=189:LOGIN_DESKTOP:6866373614764:::::

  • As the auditing option is available on a space available basis only, over-tally requests for full classes should not be granted to auditors. Overtally requests to join full classes should only be granted to degree seeking students.
  • Senior Citizen Auditors should seek a prerequisite waiver by emailing srauditq@hunter.cuny.edu and including their name, EMPL ID, all course information and indicating that they are seeking a prerequisite waiver for that course.

If I miss a semester of auditing, do I have to reapply?
Yes. You may apply for readmission by using this link: https://orapp.hunter.cuny.edu/ords/f?p=190:LOGIN_DESKTOP:8771280460903:::::

Will I earn a grade as an auditor, or submit assignments?
No. Senior Citizen Auditors do not earn grades, submit assignments or engage in class activity outside of listening to the lecture (auditing) to insure that faculty instruction, class discussion and student engagement remains focused on degree seeking students. All classroom participants are required to conduct themselves in a manner that supports a respectful and productive learning environment.

If you have additional questions, please email srauditq@hunter.cuny.edu.
