Become a Change Maker (Part 1): Social Impact Career Explorations for Pre-College Students

Course Description:

The first of a two-part pre-college Become a Change Maker Program with ISII Founder and Executive Director, Elizabeth Ngonzi (a New York-based international social sector leader, educator and executive coach), this highly interactive course will first identify and describe the various kinds of social impact organizations, such as nonprofits, social enterprises, foundations, corporate social responsibility offices and impact investors. Then, through a combination of case studies, personal coaching, self-paced study, recorded webinars, guest speakers and interactive exercises, you will:

1.      Go through a process of discovering what motivates you

2.      Discover the potential roles you can play in the social sector

3.      Learn how to craft your personal story, and how (and with whom) to share it, as you plan for a purpose- and impact-driven academic and professional career

4.      Meet and interact with other aspiring change makers (your classmates) and with world-class social impact leaders, as you begin to develop a network through which you can increase your impact

 

During this course, you will:

1.      Learn about various features of the social impact sector (e.g., organizational types, challenges addressed, key organizations and leaders)

2.      Conduct a personal review to understand your strengths, challenges, the opportunities available to you and the external factors you should consider as you pursue your goals

3.      Develop three key goals to help you craft the basis of your personal story -- a personal mission statement

4.      Craft an impact-driven professional LinkedIn profile and resume

5.      Learn how to effectively present yourself to and connect with your peers, prospective employers and leaders

6.      Interact with leaders from recognized organizations / companies and learn about their career journeys in the social impact sector

Prerequisites:

This course is most suited for pre-College students who have just completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade and who have an interest in the social sector.  When registering for the course, applicants are requested to submit 2-3 sentences about their experience and interest in the social sector (e.g., organizing a fundraiser, volunteer work). Students applying for both Parts 1 and 2 only need to submit once.
