About the Chemistry Department at Hunter
Message from the Chair
Charles Michael Drain
Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at Hunter College on the upper east side of Manhattan. We are the largest chemistry department in CUNY in terms of graduate and undergraduate students, and routinely rank in the top 40 in the United States in graduating chemistry and biochemistry majors. Both the faculty and students come from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds, and we have one of the greatest percentages of women faculty in a Ph.D. granting chemistry department in the country. The Hunter College Chemistry community has access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Mass Spectrometry, high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray, and Scanning Probe Microscopes. Our dynamic faculty are dedicated teachers and engaged mentors with research spanning the chemical enterprise. The NSF funded Math & Science Partnership is a nationally recognized program that produces top-notch high school science teachers and is key to producing a pipeline of students that will major in the sciences. The newly established radio chemistry concentration in the Ph.D. program is supported by an IGERT training grant from NSF. Please come and visit us.
