SUMMER 2009

CHINESE TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM

(UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE LEVELS)

 

Funded by STARTALK

 

Purpose: In this summer program, pre-service teachers and in-service teachers will gain professional knowledge and make their classroom teaching more effective in a short period of time.

 

Date:  June 24 to July 23, 2009

 

Location: Hunter College, 695 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065

 


 

Courses and Schedules:

 

June 24 to July 16:  Methods (CHIN 402-01 for undergraduate or CHIN 712 for graduate, 3 credits)

 

June 24 to June 28   

Lecture I (5 full days on campus, 6 hours per day; June 28: half day)

June 29 to July 3

Lecture II (5 full days on campus, 6 hours per day)

July 6 to July 9

Teaching Practicum and Student Teaching (On campus; to be arranged)

July 13 to July 16

Teaching Practicum and Student Teaching (On campus; to be arranged)

August 20, 4-6 pm

Closing Ceremony (All students must attend; location to be announced)

 

  • Note:  Students who have taken 712, 701, and 702 can sign up to participate in the no-credit teaching practicum and student teaching on a non-credit basis.

July 6 to July 23:  Teaching Chinese with Technology (CHIN 402-02 for undergraduate or CHIN 710.1  for graduate, 3 credits)

  • Note: This course is the prerequisite for online tutoring.

 


 

Events and Activities to be Attended by All Participants:

Hunter College Tuition and Fees:   $250 per undergraduate credit, $275 per graduate credit for NY residents, $500 per graduate credit for non-NY residents. Non-Hunter College students must pay non-degree application fees.

 

STARTALK Scholarship:  Students who complete the program with outstanding performance will receive up to $750 in STARTALK Scholarship per course.

 

Payment and scholarship procedures are:

 

  1. Accepted applicants pay Hunter tuition and fees upfront.
  2. Students attend the courses and program activities.
  3. Students receive the scholarship award letter with a check. (The amount of the scholarship will be determined by the Scholarship Committee)

 

Performance Assessment: Learning outcomes are assessed by attendance to all program activities, assignments, student-teaching, practicum projects, video projects, and final grades.

 

Application Deadline:  May 30, 2009. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants may be asked for an interview.

 

Application:

 

  1. Fill out the program application form.
  2. Fill out the undergraduate non-degree or graduate non-matriculated application form.
  3. Write an essay in English about your plans to teach Chinese and your progress to date in obtaining the NY certificate. (Non-Chinese applicants will write the essay in both Chinese and English)

 

Notes for Non-Hunter Students:

 

  1. Besides the program application form, you must fill out either the undergraduate non-degree application form or the graduate non-matriculated application form.
  2. On the program application form, check the courses for which you want to register.  After you obtain Hunter’s non-degree admission, you must create a student account online.
  3. All the courses in your account require departmental permission to complete registration. You may contact Professor Chao at 212-772-4965.

Work-Study Opportunities:

Open to students who are Chinese majors or in the MA in Teaching Chinese Program (full-time and part-time), and non-Hunter summer program participants with standard Mandarin pronunciation and advanced skills in speaking and writing English.

 

  • Positions available:

 

    • Classroom Helpers: We need one or two classroom helpers to work from June 23 to July 29 on Mondays and Thursdays for about three hours per day. Duties include assisting the course instructor to prepare classroom materials and equipment, facilitating classroom activies, assisting in field-trips, events, and virtual language exchange projects.

 

    • Online Tutors: We need several online tutors who will enroll in Teaching Chinese with Technology. Each tutor will practice conversation from July 27 to August 19 on Mondays and Thursdays for 30 minutes with one to four students per day. The tutors will work under the supervision of the course instructor.

 

  • The hourly pay rate is approximately $10 to $15, depending upon experience.

 

  • Interested applicants should write on a separate sheet with the following information: name, contact information, desired position, and experience.

 

  • Please send the work-study application with the summer program applicaton to Professor Chao.
