UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
INTRODUCTION
The ancient cultures
of Greece and Rome
have shaped much of our own civilization: our government, education, and even
our ways of thinking. The themes and ideas of classical mythology and
literature deeply influenced the development of the art, music, and
literature of Western Europe; classical
studies thus can provide the keys to understanding other cultures and our
own.
The Classics Division
teaches courses in Ancient Culture, Classical Literature (in English),
Archaeology, Greek, and Latin. Special Courses are also available, usually
with departmental approval (see Course
Listings), while special programs like
Tutorials and the Honors Thesis require the permission of the Division
Head. Many of our courses fulfill the General Education Requirements.
We offer five
different Majors in Classics: Greek, Latin, Greek and Latin, Classical
Studies, and Archaeology (Interdepartmental). Some majors in Classics are
interested in learning about Preparation for Secondary School Teaching;
others select from a variety of Other Possible Minors. Our majors also have
the option to Study Abroad or to pursue Summer Study closer to home.
Students from other departments at Hunter College
may choose one of the Minors in Classics. It is not necessary to have
studied Latin or Greek previously to major or minor in any of these areas.
But we suggest that you consult the Division Head or an advisor as soon as
possible.
Since our language
classes tend to be small, students and faculty have the opportunity to get
to know one another. Even our largest classes--Classical Mythology and The
Greek and Latin Roots of English--are limited to 55 students.
