THE
FACULTY
The Hebrew Division
is fortunate in having the expertise of a distinguished faculty. Indeed,
with the exception of our Adjunct Lecturers, all of our faculty members are
actively engaged in scholarly writing and publishing, in the editing of
professional journals, and in public lecturing.
In addition to their
heavy teaching load, the full-time faculty has constantly rendered service
to the College as members of a variety of committees such as the
Departmental P&B, Faculty Delegate Assembly, The Hunter Senate,
Divisional Curriculum Committee, and the Steering Committee of the
Divisional Curriculum Committee. In addition, the full-time faculty has
been actively involved in the development and implementation of new course
offerings, and devotes a great deal of time and effort to assisting
students seeking academic help and guidance.
The Hebrew Division maintains both internal and external mechanisms for
review, modification, and innovation. Thus, for example, all faculty are
regularly consulted and meet together to discuss common goals and share
pedagogical insights and resources. Indeed, these faculty meetings, as well
as our day-to-day encounters, are characterized by an unusually warm
rapport and the spirit of collegial cooperation. Regular peer observations
of individual class sessions are conducted and fully discussed with a view
toward the enhancement of teaching skills and course organization.
To conclude, there is
every reason to take pride in the past and present achievements of the
Hebrew Division of Hunter College, a view that we are pleased to note,
reflects the conclusions reached throughout the years by experts in the
field. The Goldstein Report, it will be recalled, rated Hunters Hebrew
Division as having the most diversified course offerings and the highest
number of student enrollment and retention (95%) of all the Hebrew language
programs in the City
University system. In
the most recent outside evaluation of the Hebrew Division, the special
expert in the field who was engaged by the college cited a national survey
that ranked Hunter in the top ten of Hebrew programs and stated: “but
my on-site visit has made me even more impressed with this excellent
program and its small but illustrious staff and teachers. Hunter College
and CUNY should indeed take pride in having such an outstanding program
with such an inspiring and devoted faculty.”
