M.A. PROGRAM IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING

Hunter College will inaugurate the Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) beginning Fall 2020. The Hunter MATI will be the only language-specific master’s degree program offered onsite (with online course options) on its campus in New York City. The program will enroll students in three language-specific tracks to start, in Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, paired with English.

This master’s degree program is a 30-credit, two-year curriculum for full-time students that may be completed within five years on a part-time basis. Language-specific courses in translation will prepare students to handle a wide range of texts and genres, from literary works and press releases, to research reports, and legal financial documents, as well as new media formats including film, podcasts, websites, and blog contents. Coursework will also include foundational studies in MT technologies, software localization, and terminology management systems. In interpretation, students will learn sight translation and oral rendition in the consecutive and conference mode, and community and escort interpreting serving an array of institutions in the private and public domains.
