Graduation Eligibility and Policies


Graduation Participation Eligibility

huntergrad5You are eligible to participate in the Spring 2013 Commencement Ceremony if you have fulfilled all degree requirements prior to the date of Spring Commencement. Remember, Spring 2013 graduation candidates must complete their degree audit with the Registrar's Office by March 11, 2013 to have their graduation requirements confirmed and to have their name appear in the printed program.

 

****Exceptions will be made for those students who have 6 or fewer credits to complete and who plan to complete these during the Summer 2013 sessions. (If you will be completing 6 or fewer credits in the Summer 2013 sessions, please be sure to indicate that you will be a September 2013 graduate on the Grad RSVP form and submit your RSVP by April 11, 2013, 5:00 PM)

 

Honors

Graduation with general college honors will be noted on your diploma and transcript.
A student who has completed 60 credits of traditional letter grades at Hunter College may be considered for graduation honors.

  • Summa Cum Laude: Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.900 or higher
  • Magna Cum Laude: Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.750 to 3.899
  • Cum Laude: Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.500 to 3.749

Graduation with Departmental Honors will be noted on your transcript.
Individual academic departments identify those students who are eligible to graduate with departmental honors. If you have additional questions, please contact your major department directly.

Valedictorian
Criteria: 4.0 GPA and all credits completed at Hunter College.
NOTE: College credits completed in high school through AP, College Now, or similar programs do not affect eligibility for Valedictorian, even if those credits were earned at institutions other than Hunter College.

Salutatorian(s)
Criteria:
  Either:

  •  3.900-3.999 GPA and all credits completed at Hunter College; or
  • Transfer students with 4.0 GPA and 60 or more credits completed at Hunter College

NOTE: College credits completed in high school through AP, College Now, or similar programs do not affect eligibility for Valedictorian, even if those credits were earned at institutions other than Hunter College.

For the purposes of designating Valedictorian and Salutatorians, course(s) taken "on permit" at other CUNY schools are included when calculating the GPA.

What is "Commencement"?

"Commencement" refers to Hunter's graduation ceremony. Hunter hosts two graduation ceremonies each academic year - one for winter graduation candidates and one for spring graduation candidates.
