Assessment Q & A

You asked and we answered! This new section will include questions submitted by faculty and staff, answered by the Office of Assessment!

Question: "What is the difference between a learning outcome and a learning objective?"

Answer: Often these terms are used interchangeably, but at Hunter we think of outcomes as more general and objectives as more specific, perhaps used for an individual class session or assignment. For example:

Outcome: Students will be able to describe the structure and function of the different branches of the American Federal Government.

Objective: Students will be able to identify the key leadership positions in the U.S. Congress and explain their functions.

Become an Assessment Fellow

The Assessment Fellows program develops and supports a cohort of on- campus assessment experts who will go on to share their assessment knowledge and mentor other faculty. The program provides funding for individual faculty to engage in professional development activities.

Assessment Fellows are expected to:

  • Participate in professional development actvities
  • Meet monthly as a cohort to discuss mutual challenges and opportunities
  • Share assessment knowledge more widely through blogging and presentations, including an interactive workshop at the Annual Assessment Day
  • Mentor faculty within and outside their departments, as well as next year's cohort
