The proud graduates and their families were joined by Senator Chuck Schumer, who received the President's Medal, and public arts project director Anne Pasternak, who received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts.

Wolf Blitzer, the commencement speaker and recipient of the Hunter College Inspiration Award, later spoke about the ceremony on his CNN news program, The Situation Room. He told his TV audience how moving it was to "see all these wonderful young graduates," and to hear specific stories of how a number of them had overcome major obstacles to arrive at that triumphal moment.

Those individual life stories, which were at the heart of President Jennifer Raab’s memorable commencement address, motivated Blitzer to broadcast this personal observation of the graduating Hunter students:

"So many of them have gone through so much to get where they are. I was so impressed with the class of 2013."
