Three Hunter Chinese Flagship Students Win Prestigious Boren Scholarships

Hunter Chinese Flagship students Dillon O'Connor, Rossi Petrova, and Crystal Yeh have all won prestigious Boren Scholarships to support their Flagship Capstone year of study in China starting in fall 2013. Each student will receive up to $20,000. The Boren Scholarship is an extremely competitive grant from the National Security Education Program designed to encourage undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests.

The Chinese Flagship Program strives to graduate students with a professional level of proficiency in Chinese language and culture. The Flagship Capstone year provides students with the opportunity to study in a Chinese institution and take part in an internship in a Chinese-based business or organization related to their professional interests.

Sophomore Crystal Yeh is passionate about environmental protection and hopes to become a policy maker so that she can promote the creation of sustainable environments for future generations.

Juniors Dillon O'Connor and Rossi Petrova are both pursuing double majors in political science and Chinese and are considering careers in government.

Professor Der-lin Chao, director of the Chinese Flagship Program, served as advisor to the students. Elizabeth Sachs, director of the Office of Education Abroad, is the Boren Scholarship advisor at Hunter.
