Alumna Arlene Alda '54

On the evening of March 12, alumna and award-winning photographer and author Arlene Alda '54 was at Roosevelt House to discuss her new book, Just Kids From the Bronx: Telling It the Way It Was, An Oral History. The event was moderated by columnist, author and TV show host Lenore Skenazy, and concluded with a reception and book signing. Alda's husband, Emmy Award-winning actor Alan Alda, was also in attendance.

Alda's Just Kids From the Bronx reveals what it was like to grow up in the place that bred the influencers in just about every field of endeavor today. Alda's own Bronx memories were a jumping-off point from which to reminisce with a nun, a police offer, an urban planner, and with Al Pacino, Mary Higgins Clark, Carl Reiner, Colin Powell, Maira Kalman, Bobby Bonilla, and many other leading artists, athletes, scientists and entrepreneurs.

Alda graduated Hunter Phi Beta Kappa, received a Fulbright Scholarship and realized her dream of becoming a professional clarinetist. She later became an award-winning photographer and author, writing nineteen books.
