At the Kaye: Madama Butterfly Soars with a Glowing Times Review and an Audience That Includes a Supreme Court Justice

Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Opera Star Martina Arroyo

The New York Times had high praise for the midsummer production of Madama Butterfly at Hunter’s Kaye Playhouse: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/11/arts/music/review-a-young-cast-for-the-young-lovers-of-madama-butterfly.html

Anthony Tommasini, the Times’ chief classical critic, reviewing the July 11th show, applauded the “gifted and committed young cast” and paid tribute to the opera’s sponsor, the Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance program. He went on to describe the Foundation as an organization that provides “training and performance opportunities to emerging singers” and the 660-seat Kaye as “a helpfully intimate space for young voices.”

World-famous soprano Martina Arroyo ‘56, the foundation’s president and artistic director, welcomed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the July 11th performance. That welcome echoed another landmark moment, just two years ago, when Arroyo received the Kennedy Center Honors and Sotomayor hosted the televised tribute. Both women rose from modest New York City backgrounds to the absolute top of their respective fields. And both credit an excellent education as a key factor in their brilliant success – Sotomayor in the Ivy League, and Arroyo at Hunter.
