Council on Education for Public Health Accredits the CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College for 5-Year Term

The CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College has been accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for a five-year term, extending through July 1, 2016. This school of public health is a collaborative effort involving Hunter College, Brooklyn College and Lehman College.

To earn and maintain accreditation, schools and programs must meet specific educational quality standards defined by CEPH. These standards relate to the school or program’s 1) organization, 2) instructional programs, 3) creation, application and advancement of knowledge and 4) faculty, staff and students.

For purposes of CEPH accreditation, excellence in education relates directly to proficiency in practice. Public health schools and programs focus on the preparation of individuals who will serve as practitioners, researchers and teachers who are competent to carry out broad public health functions in local, state, national and international settings.

“The accreditation process requires commitment from administrators, faculty, staff, students and other constituents,” said CEPH Executive Director Laura Rasar King, MPH, MCHES. “The Council recognizes the efforts of the CUNY School of Public Health to make ongoing improvements to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that advances them toward their career goals.”

CEPH currently accredits 48 schools and 86 programs. In addition to the United States, accredited schools and programs are located in Canada, Mexico, Lebanon and the West Indies. The Council on Education for Public Health is an independent agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and public health programs offered in settings other than schools of public health. These schools and programs prepare students for entry into careers in public health. The primary professional degree is the Master of Public Health (MPH) but other baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees are offered as well.
