The courtyard and playground at the Hunter College Campus Schools officially reopened Tuesday, November 17, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Hunter College President Jennifer J. Raab that drew dozens of students, parents, faculty and administrators as well as the city's elected officials who helped secure funding for the $1 million project.

The renovated space includes new synthetic turf, a resurfaced basketball court as well as new nets, rims and backstops and a new water fountain and new benches. The project began in June and took approximately three months to complete.

"Everyone knows Hunter High School and Hunter Elementary School have the most intellectually gifted students in the world," President Raab said at the celebration, which featured hot chocolate and cider doughnuts. "Now we have a space that's equal to their talent."

Perry Dunn, a sixth grader who's a member of the elementary school's student council, acknowledged how much she and her peers need to take a daily break from the demands of the classroom.

"Recess is such an important part of our school experience," she told the crowd. "We've had lasting memories here and know that because of your efforts there will be many more to come."

President Raab thanked the parents and faculty who worked together to plan and design the changes to the space, calling the effort a "labor of love," that's a gift not only to HCCS, but also the neighborhood. She also praised Council Member Dan Garodnick, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and former Manhattan Borough President and current New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer for allocating funding for the project.

The HCCS playground and courtyard will be open to the public weekends and holidays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 1 to September 30 and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 1 to April 30 and weekdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the fall and winter and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer, daylight permitting.
