Hunter College Mourns the Loss of Robert Lichter, Former Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry

The Hunter College community mourns the passing of Professor Robert Lichter, former Chair of the Department of Chemistry. Professor Lichter spent 13 years (1970-1983) as a member of the chemistry faculty, including four years as department Chair. He then went onto serve as a program officer at Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement, a science foundation. His career in academia spanned 30 plus years, which included a post at SUNY Stony Brook, and the NYC-based Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, an organization that managed and allocated millions of dollars annually for science education and research.

A native of Massachusetts and a graduate of Harvard University, Professor Lichter was known for his commitment to research and innovation, and his continued service on numerous boards and committees. He received many awards and prizes for his contribution to educational advancements in the sciences, including the ACS Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students into Careers in the Chemical Sciences in 2010. In his spare time, Professor Lichter - or Bob, as his friends knew him - was an avid hiker and devotee of choral singing music. He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane.
