Hunter Congratulates David Kanbergs ’17, Winner of a 2016 Beinecke Scholarship

Beinecke Scholar David Kanbergs

David Kanbergs, a junior majoring in anthropology and Middle Eastern studies, has won the Beinecke Scholarship, a major, nationally competitive prize. He is also a winner of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2016 FLAS fellowship – which is funding his trip to Morocco this summer to study Arabic and live with a host family.

The Beinecke program’s stated mission is to “provide substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise.” Kanbergs’ prize will sponsor his work toward a PhD in preparation for a college teaching career.

A native of Berkeley, Calif., Kanbergs moved to New York in 2009, and chose Hunter because it was affordable and highly recommended by friends. His experience here, he says, has exceeded his greatest expectations: “I’ve had fantastic professors who have truly gone the extra step to guide me, making extra time to discuss materials we’re studying, career choices, and life choices.”

One professor he calls “an incredible mentor” is anthropologist Leo Coleman, who “has helped me grapple with dense theory, especially in my work on my undergraduate honors thesis.”

Kanbergs also has special praise for a political philosophy course taught by Fernando Zapata, and Arabic courses taught by Christopher Stone – “not only one of the best language teachers I’ve experienced, but one of the most caring professors, who’s willing to do most anything for his students, and pushes all to be the best they can be.”
