Hunter Junior Wins Student Journalism Award

Hunter student Andrea León has won a Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence award for part one of her series "What Sweeps Through the Big Apple Sweeps Through Hunter - CUNY." Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism.

Encouraged by Film & Media professor Gregg Morris, León submitted three articles, including a three-part series on swine flu she wrote for WORD, the Hunter online publication for which she serves as senior writer/producer - which started out as a class assignment. Recently, she learned that the series placed in the top three spots in SPJ's northeast region. If she's awarded first place at the organization's regional convention in New York at CUNY next month, León could be headed to SPJ's national convention in Las Vegas in the fall.

León is thrilled with her award and also with the news that she has received credentials as a student reporter to the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. In addition to journalism, she's also interested in photo-journalism and hopes to apply to graduate programs in journalism after graduation.
