Hunter Professor Allyson Friedman Wins a Top Award for Young Research Scientists

Allyson Friedman, a new member of Hunter’s biological sciences faculty, has been named a 2015 Postdoctoral Finalist by the Blavatnik Regional Awards.

Judged by leading scientists and presented by the Blavatnik Family Foundation at the New York Academy of Sciences Annual Gala on November 9, the awards honor outstanding young scientists in the New York City metro area. At the ceremony, Professor Friedman will also receive a prize of $10,000.

Professor Friedman, an expert in cellular neurophysiology, conducts research that explores the ionic and neural circuit mechanisms of susceptibility and resilience to major depressive disorder, with a goal of identifying novel targets for treatment. She has also worked with patients with mental health disorders, exploring the biological mechanisms that underlie the protective effects of social support.

A graduate of Barnard College, Professor Friedman received her PhD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. This fall, she joined Hunter’s team of researchers at The Center for Translational and Basic Research.
