Hunter’s Accent on Excellence: Students Win the State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship

Critical Language Scholars: Faiza Masood, Hajara Masood, and Omar Albert

The Department of State has awarded its nationally competitive 2016 Critical Language Scholarship to five students at Hunter: Omar Albert ’17, Faiza Masood ’17, Hajara Masood ’17, Drake Logan and Alexandra Ehrreich.

CLS funds summer study abroad for talented, high-achieving students. Its goal is to build the ranks of Americans gaining fluency in key languages and forming bonds with the peoples of other nations.

Hunter juniors Omar Albert, Faiza Masood and Hajara Masood all share an inspirational record of achievement and a confident vision of the future. Here are highlights of their lives so far, experiences at Hunter, immediate plans for an overseas CLS summer, and extended plans for graduate studies and fulfilling careers:

Drake Logan, a doctoral candidate at The CUNY Graduate Center, and Alexandra Ehrreich, a John Jay College undergrad, are enrolled in Hunter’s Arabic Program, the most highly regarded in the City University.

A sixth awardee, Hunter Arabic student David Kanbergs ’17, was offered a CLS Scholarship, but declined that offer, and will instead study in Morocco on the U.S. Department of Education’s similarly prestigious Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship.
